I’ve been getting a lot of questions about foundation lately – people are asking about tips and tricks for applying it, or just wondering about the different types or kinds.

So in this blog, I’ll be breaking down some fundamentals you need to knowabout your foundation along side some useful tips you can use to find the right one for your skin tone.

Before I start, I’d like to note that there are brand new foundations coming out daily – there will probably be some new ones out by the time this blog is online! But most of the new products that are coming out are equipped with SPF 15 or 20, which is great because they protect your complexion from the sun.

The Right Shade

The first – and most crucial question – ladies ask is: how can I know which shade is ideal for my skin tone?

My answer is: make a streak with the foundation from your cheek down towards your jaw line and take a step or two back from the mirror. If you can clearly see the line  on your face, then it is not the right shade for you, next!

            Do’s and Don’ts

1. I always advise my ladies to try out their foundation in natural light.Artificial light can distort what the actual color looks like.
2. Use your phone and snap a photo with flash – it will expose any flaws and is your best and most objective critic when it comes to picking out the right foundation (finally, a selfie with a purpose.)
3. To get ideal coverage, use primer! 
4. Your foundation of choice should change seasonally – a tanned summer complexion is worthy of a golden-hued foundation, while pale winter skin could use a nice, moisturizing foundation in a wintry shade.

Types and Kinds

Let’s break down the different families of foundation;

Liquid Foundation

It can come in waterproof or non-waterproof versions. Liquid foundations normally look natural on the skin. Watch out – you need to blend the liquid foundation very well on your face using a damp brush or sponge, make sure to achieve perfect coverage from all the way under the jawbone up towards your hairline.

I always go for waterproof. It’s light but gives you full coverage. It gives you a nice glow and is super natural – people normally won’t notice you have it on.

Creamy Foundation

It’s the heaviest type – it normally gives the best coverage – especially if you have veins, pimples, or dark circles.

I recommend using primer before applying it, to assure you get flawless coverage. If you’re feeling too shimmery during your night out, pat your face gently with a napkin to absorb any pesky oils.

Compact Powder

It’s a great choice for working women and young ladies who are always on the go – it’s easy to carry around and it’s perfect for touching up your makeup.

One major mistake women make is that they use the sponge that comes with the compact and then return it to the case. The sponge will end up absorbing the oils on your face, which will soon dry out the powder and ruin it. I always recommend using a brush for applying your powder.
